Tribal figure from 1920s West Africa. Hand carved from dense, tropical hardwood. In many West and Central African societies a carved, seated figure with a drum or bowl in it's lap served as a receptacle for offerings to departed ancestors. Its smooth, shiny surface indicates decades of handling. A fine example of handcrafted folk art.
