c1910 Hugh Wallis (1871-1943 Hammered Pewter Tray

Hugh Wallis was educated at Ackworth School, Yorkshire, (Quaker) as were many of his family. Hugh Wallis studied art at the Herkomer Art School, Bushey, Herts., in the early 1890s and exhibited fourteen times at the RA. It is not known where he studied metal work. Hugh had a studio/workshop in Altrincham from 1900. His son Brian (1913-1981) also worked copper with the inlaid pewter (a process his father Hugh invented) AVAILABLE on behalf of a very large estate being downsized, A early c20th simple and charming hand hammered Pewter tray from renowned Artist and Art Metal Worker Hugh Wallis of Altrincham. The punch marked and chevron design to the outer rim is thought to have been utilised by the Keswick School on the edge of some items and Margaret Thompson identifies that this almost certainly was from a design created by Hugh Wallis. Likely to have been known from the Keswick School exhibiting with the Home Arts and Industries Association, and an exchange of current trends and developments between the art metalworkers.
