An antique carbide (acetylene) lamp made by Joseph Lucas Ltd. of Birmingham, England—formerly used on bicycles or motorcycles (often from product lines such as "King of the Road" or "Calcia Club") and typically dating from the Edwardian era or the 1920s/1930s. The device consists of two main chambers connected vertically. The upper chamber held water, the flow of which was regulated by a knob or valve located at the very top. The lower chamber was filled with lumps of carbide (calcium carbide). Chemical reaction: Water dripping onto the carbide triggered the release of a flammable gas—acetylene. This gas flowed to a burner positioned behind a glass lens, where, once ignited, it produced a very bright, white light. Distinctive colored glass inserts on the sides (green and red) served as position lights, while a specialized bracket on the back allowed the lamp to be mounted onto the handlebars or fork of a bicycle.
