Early 17thC Tempera Portrait of William Shakespear

This very early portrait painting, done in tempera, depicts William Shakespeare (1564-1616) and is a copy of the famous original ‘Chandos’ portrait. This painting dates from the 17th century and is most likely a posthumous monument to Shakespeare. I examined this early tempera painting under strong ultraviolet light and found no evidence of restoration. It has a very old varnish coating that has darkened over time.
