John Jowitt - Beech Tree at Hyde Crook, Dorset, (Sherbourne Art Club label to verso) Artist's Name: John Jowitt, Address: Bridport, Dorset. Painter in oil and watercolour and teacher, born in Leeds, Yorkshire. After Uppingham School he attended Yeovil Art School, 1935–9, under George Mitchell. He “taught at five art classes, three of which were further education classes.” Although he painted landscapes his main work was portraits.
