John Lord Cardiff 1791 Georgian Engraving

Antique Georgian copper plate engraving engraving of John Stuart (1744–1814), widely known in 1790 as Lord Cardiff (or Baron Cardiff of Cardiff Castle). Drawn from life by W. H. Brown and engraved by C Corbould, published according to an Act of Parliament in 1791. The engraving where compiled for The Senator; or, Clarendon’s Parliamentary Chronicle, a set of engravings of members of parliament. Paper measures 22 by 14 cm, plate mark area is 14 by 9 cm’s with the actual engraving 4 1/2 by 5 1/2 cm’s aprox. The actual engraving is in very good condition for age, paper has age related marks, bumped edges, please see pictures. John Stuart, 1st Marquess of Bute (1744–1814)—famously known in 1790 as Lord Cardiff—was a distinguished British aristocrat, diplomat, and foundational figure in the industrial history of South Wales during the Georgian era. The eldest son of the 3rd Earl of Bute, George III’s Prime Minister, Stuart was created Baron Cardiff in 1776, securing his prominent standing in the House of Lords. A diplomat of high intellect and courtly refinement, he achieved significant political standing as Britain’s Envoy to Turin and subsequently as Ambassador to Spain during the 1780s.
