Description
Beautiful antique washstand with beautiful late Victorian to early Edwardian marble-topped washstand, dating from approximately 1890–1910. It’s a particularly decorative example with several quality features. Key features * White marble top * Thick, moulded edge with a shaped front. * The marble appears original and is in good condition with attractive natural grey veining. * Decorative tiled splashback * Four transfer-printed ceramic tiles featuring birds and floral motifs in sepia/brown. * These are framed in solid timber with a shaped crest rail. * Solid timber construction * Likely walnut, satin walnut or stained ash, common in Irish and British furniture of this period. * Warm honey-brown finish with a pleasing aged patina. * Carved cabriole legs * Deeply carved acanthus leaf decoration at the knees. * Scroll feet with carved detailing. * These carved legs indicate it was a better-quality piece rather than a mass-produced washstand. * Central drawer * Original turned wooden knobs. * Used for toiletries, brushes and shaving equipment. * Shaped base stretcher * Adds rigidity while giving the piece an elegant profile. Tile timber is detachable.
