Miniature Watercolour Portrait of Louis XVI - Circa 1800's The king is wearing a crimson coat richly embroidered in gold, and featuring the Huguenot cross against a softly lit background. Watercolour on vellum backed card with a covered card back with vellum to one side and old textile to the other, the ornate brass frame has a stand and a hanging ring with a thin oval of glass to protect the painting. Condition: Very good with no damage to the frame or painting - textile back slightly grubby with the faded number 897 written in pencil - no visible signature - see all images for condition. Dimensions: Watercolour - 2 1/2" high x 2" wide Frame: 3 1/2" high x 2 1/2" wide (Overall) A striking pose of Louis XVI, the French monarch who lost his life at the guillotine in 1793. This 19th C. miniature is based on several portraits of the Bourbon king by Antoine-Francois Callet and his followers during and after Louis' life time.
