Pair of Gustavian Side Chairs, Sweden, circa 1790 to 1805

A fine pair of Gustavian side chairs, hand-carved in Sweden around the turn of the 19th century. Each chair features a delicate crest with carved anthemion detail above a circular medallion back centered by a ten-petal rosette with latticework. The carving is entirely hand-executed, with charming irregularities in the rosettes and fluting that confirm period craftsmanship. The legs are square and tapered with fluted fronts, joined by mortise-and-tenon construction without nails or screws. Both chairs originally had rattan (cane) seats, as evidenced by the surviving marks to the underside; this was a fashionable feature in late Gustavian interiors, inspired by French neoclassical design. The finish shows traces of earlier paint and gilding, with an aged patina consistent with two centuries of use.
