Description
A fine pair of Gustavian side chairs, hand-carved in Sweden around the turn of the 19th century. Each chair features a delicate crest with carved anthemion detail above a circular medallion back centered by a ten-petal rosette with latticework. The carving is entirely hand-executed, with charming irregularities in the rosettes and fluting that confirm period craftsmanship. The legs are square and tapered with fluted fronts, joined by mortise-and-tenon construction without nails or screws. Both chairs originally had rattan (cane) seats, as evidenced by the surviving marks to the underside; this was a fashionable feature in late Gustavian interiors, inspired by French neoclassical design. The finish shows traces of earlier paint and gilding, with an aged patina consistent with two centuries of use. These chairs represent the restrained elegance of the Gustavian style, combining classical motifs with Scandinavian lightness and simplicity. Details Origin: Sweden Date: circa 1790–1805 Style: Gustavian / Late Neoclassical Materials: Painted and parcel-gilt wood (likely birch or beech) Seat: Originally cane/rattan, now ready for re-caning or upholstery Condition: Wear and patina consistent with age; structurally sound Dimensions (approx.)
