Rare Flagon

This item is a vintage W&A Gilbey Ltd stoneware flagon or jug, likely used for selling gin, from the late 19th or early 20th century. The ceramic is manufactured by Doulton Lambeth, as indicated by the small stamp at the bottom.  Details Company: W&A Gilbey was a successful wine and spirit merchant business founded in London in 1857. They acquired the famous Pantheon building on Oxford Street in 1867 and began distilling their own gin there in 1872, eventually becoming one of the largest drinks firms in the world. Location: The jug is marked "OXFORD STREET, LONDON. W", referring to the company's headquarters at the Pantheon building. Manufacturer: The ceramic maker, Doulton, was well-known for producing high-quality salt-glazed stoneware items, including advertising flagons like this one.
