Lady Butler, born Elizabeth Southerden Thompson (1846–1933), was a renowned British painter famed for her vivid depictions of military scenes from the Crimean and Napoleonic wars. Her most famous work, “The Roll Call,” was purchased by Queen Victoria after drawing huge crowds at its Royal Academy debut. Butler’s art focused on the heroism and hardships of ordinary soldiers, often highlighting the emotional cost of war rather than its glory.
