Leapmotor T03 Review

The Leapmotor T03 is the first car from the Chinese brand to reach Ireland, arriving through Gowan Auto under the Stellantis umbrella. It is a five-door city car measuring just 3,620 mm long, with short overhangs and an upright cabin designed to maximise interior space within a very compact footprint. A panoramic sunroof with a powered shade is standard across the range, which helps the small cabin feel considerably brighter than its dimensions suggest.

Styling is functional rather than fashion-led. The T03 will not turn heads in the way a Fiat 500e does, but its clean, unfussy exterior is well-judged for its purpose — this is a car designed to slot into tight urban parking spaces and school-run drop-off zones, and it does both without drama.

The cabin is where the T03 surprises. A 10-inch central touchscreen with integrated navigation is flanked by an 8-inch digital driver cluster, giving the dashboard a more modern feel than you expect at this price. Bluetooth, voice control, wireless updates over the air, and smartphone-linked features via the Leapmotor app — including remote lock, pre-conditioning and battery monitoring — are all standard.

Material quality is honest for the money. Seats are fabric, the steering wheel is leatherette, and harder plastics dominate below eye level. What the T03 gets right is space management: headroom is strong enough to accommodate adults up to around 190 cm, and the boot offers 210 litres rising to 508 litres with the rear seats folded using the car's "Magic Space" folding system. For a car this small, it is a well-organised interior that prioritises everyday usability over perceived premium feel.

The T03 uses a single front-mounted electric motor producing 70 kW (95 hp), which is plenty for a city car of this size. Acceleration from 0–50 km/h takes 3.7 seconds, which translates into confident pull-away at traffic lights and easy integration into urban traffic. Top speed is 130 km/h, and three drive modes (Eco, Normal, Sport) plus three steering-weight settings give the driver some ability to tailor the feel.

Around town, the T03 is exactly what it needs to be. The steering is light, visibility is excellent thanks to the upright seating position, and the turning circle makes tight parking and U-turns straightforward. Ride comfort is adequate on typical Irish urban surfaces, though the short wheelbase means rougher roads are felt more than in a larger car.

The caveat is motorway driving. The T03 will cruise at Irish motorway speeds, but it is working hard to do so, and wind and tyre noise become noticeable above 100 km/h. This is not a car built for a weekly Cork-to-Dublin run, and buyers should be honest with themselves about their driving patterns before committing.

This is where the T03 makes its strongest case. Annual motor tax is €120 — the lowest Irish band available, and applicable to all battery-electric vehicles regardless of power output. The 37.3 kWh usable battery delivers a WLTP range of 265 km, which translates to a real-world range of roughly 200 to 230 km in mixed Irish driving, and closer to 250 km on purely urban routes where regenerative braking works in the car's favour.

Charging via a 7 kW home wallbox takes around six hours for a full top-up, making overnight charging straightforward. DC rapid charging peaks at a modest 48 kW, enabling a 30–80 per cent charge in approximately 36 minutes — workable for the occasional longer journey but noticeably slower than the 100+ kW figures available on more expensive EVs.

The six-year unlimited-mileage warranty is a significant ownership safety net, particularly for a new brand in the Irish market where buyers may be understandably cautious about long-term reliability and parts availability. The Stellantis and Gowan Auto distribution network provides service backing that some other new Chinese EV entrants cannot match.

Leapmotor quotes 265 km WLTP range from the 37.3 kWh battery, and real-world figures tend to track reasonably close to that in urban driving. On a motorway-heavy route in winter, expect closer to 175–200 km. For an Irish buyer whose typical driving pattern is a 20–30 km commute plus weekend errands, that is more than sufficient — most owners will charge once or twice a week at home and rarely touch a public charger. For anyone planning regular inter-county journeys, the T03 is the wrong tool for the job.

The most obvious rival is the Hyundai Inster, which is the class-leader and is selling like hot cakes. This remains the best in class and the obvious choice. The Citroën ë-C3 — a stablemate under Stellantis — is larger, offers more range and feels more substantial on the road, at a meaningfully higher price. The Fiat 500e competes on style rather than value and costs more in like-for-like specification. For buyers willing to stretch the budget, the MG4 opens up proper family-EV capability, but it moves the conversation out of the city-car segment entirely.
