First introduced in 1928 as the inaugural legal tender of the Irish Free State, this series remained in circulation until 1977, though the 10 shilling denomination was issued until 1968 before being replaced by the 50p coin. It is widely considered one of the most beautiful banknote designs in modern history. ​Design Details: Front (Obverse): Features the classic portrait of Lady Hazel Lavery, wife of the renowned artist Sir John Lavery. The portrait depicts her as Kathleen ni Houlihan, the mythical heroine of Ireland, set against a backdrop of the Lakes of Killarney.
