19th-century antique Catholic family Bible, often featuring a gilt-embossed leather binding with an ornate Gothic cross, religious scenes, and metal clasps, commonly dating from the 1870s to 1890s (such as the 1884 Douay-Rheims or Haydock editions). Gilt-embossed, heavy leather cover featuring a central raised Gothic or Celtic-style cross, floral filigree, and small religious emblems (such as the Sacred Heart or symbols of the Evangelists). Side metal clasps or clamps designed to keep the thick pages pressed flat and protected. Family Bibles from this era typically include the Douay-Rheims translation (frequently with commentary by George Leo Haydock) and dedicated pages in the center for recording family births, marriages, and deaths.
