Antique French Napoleon III Wall Crucifix

Rare Antique French Napoleon III Monastic Wall Crucifix (c. 1890) - Heavy Cast Iron and Ebonized Gold Wood. Price: €120 (Offers). An exceptional opportunity to acquire a striking, museum-quality piece of European religious heritage. Imported directly from France, this commanding wall crucifix is designed in the classic Napoleon III Ecclesiastical style and exemplifies the pinnacle of late 19th-century French craftsmanship. Unlike common mass-produced reproductions, this is a heavy, solid devotional artifact weighing over a kilogram (1,042g) and measuring a substantial 48cm x 24cm, making it a breathtaking, historic focal point for any traditional or eclectic home. The Hidden History and Craftsmanship: Every inch of this crucifix tells a story of genuine age and professional workshop production: • The Monastic Workshop Clues: The reverse side bears a crisp, hand-stamped workshop inventory number "22" accompanied by a prized fragment of its original antique paper manufacturing label ending in "700". These details guarantee its origin from an established French ecclesiastical manufacturer rather than an amateur home project. • The Master Joinery: The cross is structurally built to last centuries, utilizing a traditional half-lap joint secured on the reverse by four rugged, hand-forged iron pins with beautifully hammered heads. Original workshop pilot marks are still visible where the artisan hand-aligned the frame. • The Ebonized and Gilded Cross: The body is crafted from deep, ebonized pine to mimic rare ebony wood, elegantly framed by an intricate, raised gold-leaf border molding that beautifully catches the light. • The Heavy Cast Iron Corpus: The figure of Christ is a magnificent example of sand-cast ironwork from historic French foundries. It has been gently conserved to reveal crisp, three-dimensional definition in the hair, face, and draped loincloth, retaining a stunning, time-earned cream patina and honest metallic weathering. • 100% Original Period Hardware: Uniquely, this piece retains its original custom-cast ornate iron figural screws on the front (serving as the holy nails) and its authentic French triangular iron hanging loop on the reverse, held by original hand-struck tacks. It is structurally solid and entirely ready to hang. An Investment Piece: With its rich contrast of ebonized black, bright gold molding, and historic iron patina, this Napoleon III style crucifix offers an incredible presence that cannot be replicated by modern items. It has been meticulously dried and stabilized, completely free of modern chemical residue, preserving its value for generations to come.
