Antique Slate Fireplace / mid-to-late 19th century / Victorian

Beautiful antique Victorian fireplace, believed to date from the 1860s or later, with an original slate surround and highly distinctive decorative detailing. A rare and characterful period fireplace featuring a substantial slate surround with original black and red marbled/japanned decoration. The slate has been hand-decorated with intricate raised/embossed ornamental detailing, giving the fireplace a wonderfully authentic Victorian appearance. The fireplace includes the original slate surround, decorative side panels, inner fireplace components and fire grate, with all the main parts present. It is currently in unrestored condition, with the original finish showing considerable age, scratches, wear and areas where the surface has deteriorated. It would benefit from careful professional cleaning and sympathetic restoration to bring out the original decorative finish.
