A backlit lithophane from 1985, featuring the classic motif "The Water Carrier" and produced by the Belleek Pottery manufactory. A lithophane is a technique for creating three-dimensional images in thin, unglazed porcelain; these images become fully visible and detailed only when illuminated from behind. Although the manufactory had been producing lithophanes as early as the 19th century, this particular model—housed in a mahogany wooden light box—was introduced (or reissued) in 1985.
