Description
A copy of Constance Markievicz by Sean O’Faolain, published by Sphere in 1967. Countess Constance Markievicz (1868-1927), born Gore-Booth of a rich Anglo-Irish family, was loved by the poor of Dublin whose cause she championed against the brutality and harshness of British rule. The Rebel (or Red) Countess as she was known, was the only uniformed woman officer in the 'Easter Rising' of 1916 and, as a national heroine, the only one in Dublin to be honoured with a statue. She was also the first woman to be elected to Parliament, but never took her seat. The story of this beautiful, dedicated woman-her friends included Yeats, 'Casey, De Valera-has been revived for this Sphere edition by the author, Sean O'Faolain, who knew her. Dr. O'Faolain has also written a new introduction.
