Very Large Icon Printed On Wooden Board 50 x 42 cms item is on a plain backed board Item 1" thick White label on rear with following text in german :see picture (11) THE DROW OF ST. JOHN (rare subject) Central Russia, circa 1700. 22.9 x 19.8 cm The depiction of the burial of this saint on this small icon is particularly vivid and moving. The grief of the fourteen people present is evident in their faces. The monastery in the background is rendered with exceptional finesse. In the corners are depicted the four Evangelists: in the upper left, John with Prochorus, to whom he is dictating the Gospel; in the upper right, Matthew; in the lower left, Luke; in the lower right, Mark; and on the left and right edges, the two Apostles Peter and Paul. This is a rare collector's item
