Máırín Ní Ċrıagáın was a daughter of Morgan Cregan and Ellen O’Shea. She was born on 27th March 1891in Killorglin, Co. Kerry and was baptised Mary Esther Cregan. She married Jim Ryan from Wexford who was chief medical officer in the GPO, Dublin during the 1916 Easter Rising. Máırín and Jim were staunch nationalists throughout their lives. Jim held several ministerial positions in government. Máırín went on to become a prolific and successful writer of books for children, plays and newspaper and magazine articles. Her first book for children was “Old John” published in 1936. She published the Irish language version of it in 1938, “Sean-Eoin”. This is the 1st Edition of this book published in 1938 by Oifig an tSoláṫair, Dublin. It has 226 pages. The cover is green cloth hardback with dust jacket which is torn in places (see photos). It contains 5 colour illustrations plus 5 monochrome illustrations by Jack B. Yeats. It is a good clean copy of this very rare book. Price: €80. Postage extra. Please contact Pat on 087-2839129.
