Arkle & Shergar Hardboard Pictures. Shergar was one of the most famous flat-racing horses ever. He won the 1981 Derby at Epsom by an astonishing 10 lengths — still a record margin. His disappearance in 1983 after being kidnapped from a stud farm became one of racing’s greatest mysteries. Walter “Willie” Swinburn rode him in that Derby. Arkle is almost mythical in National Hunt racing. He dominated steeplechasing in the 1960s and won the Cheltenham Gold Cup three times. Many racing historians still call him the greatest steeplechaser ever. Pat Taaffe was his legendary jockey and practically inseparable from Arkle’s legacy.
