R.A.V. Hamilton was a well-known amateur artist. He was a serving officer in the British Army with a particular interest in the native breeds of Ireland. He bred and showed Great Danes and Wolfhounds and was a member of the Irish Kennel Club. Hamilton painted many of the most famous Irish dogs of the day, and numbered among his patrons the Rank family. These portraits were normally painted in pairs with the dogs and bitches shown opposite one another standing in their native landscape. Many of his works are still in private hands and some can be seen hanging in the Irish Kennel Club, Dublin. Postage available at buyer cost .
