But she's standing directly under a waterfall only she can feel - the deep blue pouring down through the centre of her and streaming out beneath, constant, cold, and completely invisible to anyone looking from outside. Soft pink flesh pulled tight and inward, spiky tendrils rising off the top of her like she's still trying to reach air even while standing perfectly still. It looks calm from a distance. It isn't. This piece comes from something real: the particular exhaustion of surviving bullying, of hiding in plain sight, of losing track of who you actually are underneath everything that was done to you. You can drown standing up, in broad daylight, in front of people who have no idea it's happening.
