Description

Fully Restored Marshall JCM 602 2x12 Marshall purists look away. This isn't your standard 90s production Marshall. This JCM 602 has been completely overhauled and rehoused in a bespoke, rock-solid cabinet crafted from aged oak. The Custom Oak Cabinet The original cabinet needed to be replaced. Crafted entirely from salvaged oak school desks (hopefully Angus Young would approve). The cabinet is a direct facsimile of the original JCM 602 dimensions—matching the exact side taper and back panel orientation—with a reduced edge round-over. Dowel and wood-glue construction makes this enclosure incredibly dense and structurally rock-solid. The oak is stained dark walnut and is finished in a hard wearing easy to repair acrylic varnish. The speaker baffle is MDF and is covered in a very nice basketweave grill material. The predessor of this 1997 JCM 600 series was infamous for trapping heat inside the chassis. This amp has the diamond cut outs in the chassis that solved this. I have added some additional features which will keep this amp cool no matter how hard it's driven. Active Exhaust Fan: A silent 12V fan is installed beneath the tube cage (non-destructive and fully removable), powered by a dedicated internal 240V-to-12V transformer tied to the main power switch. When the amp is on the fan is on. Small connector allows the cage and fan to be removed as one when access to tubes is required. This connector can also be used to disconnect the fan. Increased Airflow: Top vent area has been increased by 50% (see photo of old vent next to new vents). You can run this amp hard all day—or push it heavy with an attenuator—and the chassis, PCB, and components will remain comfortably cool. As a bonus, the expanded top vents allow you to easily monitor the glow of the power tubes while playing (see photo). Comprehensive Circuit Restoration The electronics on this vintage amp (1997). have been overhauled. Full Recap & Reflow: All main filter electrolytics have been replaced. Remaining capacitors were verified with an ESR meter. The connections (pots and jacks) on the PCB has been reflowed to eliminate the cold-solder joint cracking common in older amps. Switching logic: Original sluggish relays were replaced for dead-silent, immediate channel switching. Improved Signal Path: The 30-year-old op-amps have been replaced with fresh, low-noise ICs, giving the FX loops and Reverb a cleaner signal path. Hardware: All potentiometers and jacks have been cleaned. Zero scratchiness. Tubes, Speakers & Tone Tubes: Loaded with a fresh, matched pair of TAD EL34 Redbase power tubes, perfectly biased and running stable at 35mA. There are 4 12AX7, 3 in the preamp and one phase inverter. Speakers: Features a massive-sounding 2x12 pairing: a relatively new Celestion Vintage 30 and a broken-in G12T-75 (wired in parallel for an 8-ohm load). Reverb: Brand new TAD Spring Reverb Tank installed, featuring independent level controls for both channels. This sounds really nice. The Sound: The clean channel on this era of Marshall is legendary—highly articulate with a Fender/Vox-like chime that makes it an great pedal platform. The overdrive channel delivers that unmistakable, thick classic rock growl Both channels are footswitchable (no footswitch included) and have independent bass, middle and treble. Also global presence for help tweak the amp sound for different rooms. Features: Parallel and Series FX loops, built-in speaker-emulated line out, and outputs for 1x8 ohm or 2x16 ohm speaker loads. Interested in swapping for a Gibson Les Paul studio, junior or melody maker.
