Maserati 100 Year No39 Maserati 420M Eldorado 1958 Race of 2 Worlds #10 Stirling Moss 7th ** MASERATI 100 YEARS COLLECTION ** published by Grani & Partners PRICE >> €10 or Best Offer The “Race of Two Worlds” or 500 Miglia di Monza (500 Miles of Monza) was held in 1957 and 1958 utilising the banked circuit at Monza which had opened in 1955. The race earned the nickname of Monzanapolis. The race was between the American Indianapolis type cars and more pure-bred European race cars, mainly F1 type. American drivers, cars and teams won in both years. Maserati’s entry in 1958 was a specially built race car, the 420M. This was based on their successful, lightweight F1 250F fitted with uprated suspension from the 450S sports car. The car had a special alcohol-fueled V8 engine with a very short stroke. The engine, offset to the left of the chassis, was a Maserati Tipo 54 90° V8 DOHC of 4,190cc with 2 valves per cylinder & 4 Weber 45 IDM carburettors giving 410 bhp @ 8,000rpm. The Maserati, officially entered on behalf of Maserati by Zanetti with "Eldorado Italia" ice cream sponsorship, was driven by Stirling Moss. Moss did well in the first two heats, 4th and 5th. However, in the third heat, the steering collapsed on the 40th lap, sending Moss off the track at 260 kph. Amazingly he was unhurt. The car was ranked 7th overall at the end of the race. Model is in good condition and is on original display base. The model on base is in original cardboard/clear plastic packaging which has been opened. More photographs are available on request.
