Collectable Minichamps – Brabham BT46 “Fan Car”

The model is the high quality packaging used by Minichamps for it’s Classic Formula 1 cars. Developed in 1978 by Brabham, the "Fan Car" (BT46B) was based on the standard BT46. It only raced once in that year's Swedish GP at Anderstorp. The "Fan Car" was developed to counter the dominant ground effect Lotus 79. The fan, driven by it's engine, generated an immense amount of downforce. Brabham claimed the fan was to increase cooling, but it also extracted air from beneath the car. The Parmalat Racing Team, Ecclestone's Brabham works team, entered two BT46B Fan Cars in the 1978 Swedish GP at Anderstorp, for regular drivers Lauda (1) and Watson (2). Despite protests by other teams, the FIA allowed the Fan Cars to race. Andretti's Lotus 79 secured pole but the two Fan Cars were second and third, Watson ahead of Lauda. Andretti led into the first corner, with Lauda getting second from Watson. Andretti and Lauda battled for the lead until half distance when Andretti retired. Lauda went on to win the race, his first for Brabham. It would be the only victory for the BT46B "Fan Car". Brabham withdrew the concept even though the FIA had ruled it could be used for the rest of 1978. Model is in very good condition and is in its original display case.
