The primary War of Independence medal is The Service (1917-1921) Medal, approved by the Irish Government in 1942 to be issued to those who served in the period of the Irish War of Independence (up to July 11, 1921) and qualified for a military pension. The medal features a figure of a volunteer surrounded by the Four Provinces of Ireland, with "ÉIRE" and "Cogadh na Saoirse" inscribed on it.
