The Ancestral Breakfront The maximalists have won and the bookcase is their trophy. Not a shelf — a facade. Four glazed doors, mahogany gone the colour of an old cello, burr veneer pooling across the panels like spilled amber, and eight drawers below that no one will ever fully explain the contents of. This is furniture as architecture: it doesn't sit in the room, it fronts it, the way a Georgian townhouse fronts a square. The styling notes, should you be taking them: books shelved by instinct, never by colour. A ceramic gin bottle where a decanter should be. Something faintly ecclesiastical on a middle shelf. An hourglass, running. Cookbooks in French that go unopened but not unnoticed. Above the cornice, the pile-up — a lustre jar, a hurricane glass, a framed photograph of people whose names have started to blur. The rug beneath is old, red, and genuinely walked on. Everything is slightly too much and nothing is arranged. Watch this space: brown furniture is at the bottom of its market and the young are circling.
