Vehicle overview
Description
More Honda Cubs have been built than any other motor vehicle in history. Not any other motorcycle. Any other motor vehicle. Over one hundred million of them since 1958, which is more than the Ford Model T, the Beetle and the Corolla put together. When something gets made that many times over that many decades, it is usually because the original design was very close to perfect. This 1998 Super Cub 90 is that design in one of its nicest forms, and we were pleased to get our hands on a tidy one. The colour is the first thing people notice. A deep bottle green over the cream leg shields, with chrome mudguards, a chrome carrier and chrome on the exhaust. It is a far smarter combination than the red and white most people picture when you say Cub, and it gives this one a quietly classic look that suits it enormously. Mechanically it is the same recipe that made the reputation. An 89cc four stroke single, air cooled, with the semi automatic gearbox that means you get proper gears with your foot but no clutch lever to think about. That setup is the Cub's clever bit. It is genuinely easy to ride, but it still feels like riding a motorcycle rather than a scooter, and that pressed steel backbone frame will outlast most things on the road. It is honest about what it is. It will not win any traffic light races. What it will do is start every morning, return fuel economy that borders on ridiculous, cost very little to tax and insure, and carry on doing that for years with almost no attention. Cubs have famously covered enormous distances on nothing more than oil changes and the occasional chain. Some of the highlights: 89cc air cooled four stroke single Three speed semi automatic gearbox, no clutch lever Step through frame with a low seat height Bottle green and cream with chrome mudguards Chrome rear carrier fitted Spoked wheels front and rear Legendary fuel economy and running costs 23,178 km showing This one suits a few different people. It is ideal for someone wanting cheap, dependable transport around town that still has a bit of character. It is a lovely thing for a collector who appreciates what the Cub represents. And it makes a great deal of sense as a first bike, because it is light, low and about as forgiving as a motorcycle gets. Clean Cubs in the nicer colours are getting harder to find here, particularly ones that have not been thrashed as a delivery bike. If you like the look of this one, come down and have a proper look. We will be glad to show you around it.
