These are wonderful, intelligent and affectionate animals, but they are not low-maintenance pets and prospective owners should be prepared for their specialised needs and long-term commitment. About sugar gliders: • Social animals that generally do best with another compatible sugar glider rather than living alone. • Nocturnal, so they are most active during the evening and at night. • They need plenty of space, climbing opportunities, enrichment and regular interaction. • They can live for many years, so taking one on is a long-term responsibility. • They require an exotic-pet veterinarian who is familiar with sugar gliders. • They can bond closely with their owners, but patience and gentle handling are important. Diet & nutrition: Sugar gliders require a balanced, species-appropriate diet, rather than simply being fed fruit. Their diet should provide appropriate protein, calcium, vitamins and other nutrients. Depending on the diet plan used, this can include an appropriately formulated sugar-glider diet alongside suitable vegetables, limited fruit and appropriate sources of protein/insects. Their nutritional needs should be discussed with an exotic-animal veterinarian, as an improperly balanced diet can lead to serious health problems. Fresh, clean water must always be available.
