This type of woodworkers vice has been used since the middle ages and will grip wooden boards firmly and securely without damaging finished surfaces. I use it, fitted to my Nicholson bench, almost every day. Its easy to make and will fit to almost any bench. See the last two pictures for innovative ways to use a leg vice.
