Every now and then a car arrives that reminds you why America became so good at building mile-eaters. Long, low, unapologetically V8-powered and capable of making even the shortest journey feel like Route 66. This is one of those cars. Presented in its beautiful factory combination of Skylight Blue over a matching Medium Blue XL vinyl interior, this 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 XL Fastback is one of the nicest examples we’ve had the pleasure of driving. More importantly, it isn’t just another old American car that squeaks, rattles and floats its way down the road like a sofa on roller skates. Quite the opposite. Under the bonnet sits Ford’s legendary 390 cubic inch (6.4-litre) FE V8, producing the effortless torque these cars are famous for. Fire it up and you’re greeted with a wonderful burble from the upgraded exhaust system, while out on the road it simply pulls like a train. There’s torque everywhere, the gearbox shifts beautifully and thanks to the addition of electric power steering, it’s remarkably easy to drive. You’d happily point it at Cork, Belfast or the south of France without a second thought. The suspension remains factory specification, with components having been renewed, so it retains exactly the ride quality Ford intended while feeling tight and composed. It genuinely drives far better than many American classics we’ve experienced. The XL wasn’t just a badge. It represented the premium sporting model in the Galaxie range, featuring upgraded bucket seats with centre console, additional brightwork, deluxe trim, sporty interior appointments and a far more luxurious feel than the standard models. It transformed the Galaxie from family transport into one of America’s original personal grand tourers. Cosmetically, the car is wonderfully honest. The paint has a lovely character, the chrome presents beautifully and the interior is simply exceptional. Open the doors and you’re greeted by what must be one of the finest original cabins we’ve seen in a Galaxie. The seats, dash, carpets and trim all have the sort of originality that’s almost impossible to recreate. Underneath is where this car really continues to impress. The floors are outstanding, exactly what you hope to find but rarely do. It has clearly been cherished throughout its life rather than merely kept alive. Included with the sale is a complete front brake upgrade kit, incorporating disc brakes and a servo, allowing the next owner to upgrade braking performance should they wish. It’s a valuable addition that comes with the car. With very few surviving in this condition, and even fewer in Ireland, this is an opportunity to own a genuinely rare American icon that stands apart from the crowd. Anyone can buy a Mustang.
