Introduced for the 1987 model year, the S4 was a significant step up from the S2, increasing the V8’s displacement from 4.7 to 5.0-litres, and adding a 32-valve DOHC cylinder head design. Braking was via uprated Brembo front discs and four-piston callipers, while the multi-link ‘Weissach’ rear axle kept handling in check.
