There are tractors… and then there are Porsche tractors. What we have here is something altogether more special—a 1961 Porsche Diesel 238 Standard Star, and quite possibly the only machine that can plough a field and still make you feel like you should be wearing driving gloves. Beautifully presented in its correct red, this is a piece of Stuttgart history that’s equal parts agricultural workhorse and collector’s dream. Powered by a wonderfully characterful 1.6-litre air-cooled diesel twin, producing a mighty (and very honest) 25 horsepower, it’s about as far removed from modern motoring as you can get—in the best possible way. Fully mechanical, delightfully analogue, and with Bosch injection ticking away like a Swiss watch, it delivers an experience that’s raw, engaging, and surprisingly brisk. In fact, it’s genuinely one of the fastest tractors we’ve ever driven—cruising along with a sense of purpose that feels almost… un-tractor-like. This particular example has been sympathetically restored and is as usable as it is eye-catching. It starts easily, drives beautifully, and sits on a full set of new tyres, ready for whatever you might have in mind—be that light duties, show appearances, or simply admiring it in your garage with a cup of tea (or something stronger). The details are where it really shines. The original Porsche red vinyl seat remains in place, while a cleverly added rear seat with lap belts means you can now share the experience—something we suspect wasn’t high on the original design brief back in 1961. Up front, you’re greeted by a gorgeous wooden Moto-Lita steering wheel, Porsche badged of course, giving you that unmistakable sense of occasion every time you climb aboard. The design is unmistakably Porsche. The iconic bullnose front, grille-less and purposeful, hides the cooling fan and twin battery setup, while the frameless construction uses the engine and drivetrain as the structure itself—simple, clever, and beautifully engineered. There’s no suspension to speak of, no unnecessary comforts, just pure mechanical honesty. Headlights and taillights mean it’s road-capable too… although we’d recommend choosing your routes wisely unless you’re keen to create a queue of confused motorists behind you. Whether you’re a serious Porsche collector, looking for the ultimate conversation piece, or simply someone who appreciates engineering with character, this 238 Standard Star ticks every box.
